BILOXI, Miss – April 13, 2016 – Fallen Oak hosted the seventh annual Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic Presented by C Spire on April 1-3 with Miguel Angel Jimenez taking home the trophy and $240,000. The Tom Fazio-designed course hosted some of the greatest golfers in the world during the event, including 26 of the Top 30 on the current Charles Schwab Cup Money List, but it was “the most interesting man in golf” who took home his third PGA TOUR Champions title after he shot 8-under 64. Jimenez’s bogey-free, final-round 8-under-par 64 was the lowest final round in tournament history.
Jimenez was in third going into the final round after 36 holes on Saturday. Due to weather conditions, play was suspended on Friday and PGA TOUR officials announced that the first and second rounds would both be played on Saturday. Runner-up Scott Dunlap was holding the number one spot at the end of the 12 hour 36 minutes of play on Saturday. Thanks to continued sunny skies and Fallen Oak’s SubAir system, the final round on Sunday brought the pros better conditions for play and spectators filled the public areas and skyboxes along the championship course. An estimated 20,000 spectators and volunteers watched Jimenez clench the title. Jimenez played his final 30 holes without a bogey and led all players with 17 birdies. At the closing ceremony on No. 18, Jimenez held up his trophy and kissed it. Before departing Fallen Oak, Jimenez raised his glass and led a toast in the Fallen Oak clubhouse, a hallmark cigar in hand.
“It’s a distinct pleasure to host the tournament and we welcome not only the distinguished group of players, but the thousands of volunteers and spectators to Fallen Oak,” said Beau Rivage General Manager Marcus Glover, “We are honored to host an event of this magnitude on our property and provide an event families, fans and visitors can come enjoy.”
Once again, many of the PGA TOUR Champions most decorated players found a course not only in pristine condition, but a course among the most decorated they play all year. Fallen Oak has earned numerous awards since it opened in November 2006. It earned No. 36 on Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses for 2015/16 while Golf has named Fallen Oak No. 30 in its Top 100 Courses You Can Play.
Stretching to a hearty 7,487 yards from the back tees, Fallen Oak offers golfers five sets of tees and strategic play options as each hole winds through ever-changing terrain and environments.
